Disqus….A good way to manage comment spam?

August 30, 2010 by Glenn Boothe 0 Comments

I really hope so! If I had a nickel for every worthless comment on this blog I would be a rich man. :)

Search Engine Optimization drives this terrible behavior and leads to countless wasted hours moderating and deleting. In the world of increasingly competitive SERPs companies will do anything to get onto the first page of Google and commenting on every blog they can find seems to be job 1. What I don’t understand though is why they don’t just take a little extra time and actually post a relevant comment. Surely that would amount to a net positive gain in actual comments being posted.

So, what can you do about it?

  1. Disable comments – pretty lame option for a blog….I mean it is all about having a conversation right?
  2. Moderate comments with built in tools – In my experience this takes a lot of time and energy.
  3. Anything goes – I know a few people that do this because they don’t want to be bothered but when a blog visitor comes and only sees a link farm are they really going to take your content seriously?
  4. Use a third party provider like Disqus – I am very hopeful this will work wonders and will update the blog soon with my results.

If you know of any other great strategies or tools for fighting comment spam make sure to leave a comment (a real one please).
